Rowan County, Kentucky was
founded in 1856 and named after John Rowan whom had represented Kentucky in the United
States House of Representatives between the years of 1807 and 1809, and also represented
Kentucky as a member of the Unites States Senate from 1825 to 1831.
Farmers was the first community to develop in
Rowan County, settled by Major Jim Brain. In the late 1800's, Farmers had expanded quickly
- due to primarily the extensive hardwood forests for the timbering industry and became
the largest city in Rowan County. And as quickly as it became the largest city -
inevitably the timbering became exhausted and Farmers faded around 1900.
In 1974, Cave Run Lake, the largest man-made
lake in Eastern Kentucky, 8,200 acres, was created beginning in the north end of Farmers.
Today, Farmers is becoming a popular
attraction with the Daniel Boone National Forest being in the midst and the Muskie Capitol
of the South. Come and enjoy our lake at Cave Run. Info is just a click away!
